Engineering challenge
Distributed controllers must exchange information predictably despite shared-bus traffic, interrupt activity, and electrical noise.
Technical approach
- Integrate microcontrollers with CAN, I²C, SPI, UART, and other interfaces appropriate to system needs.
- Capture communication waveforms and correlate bus activity with timing behavior observed in firmware.
- Isolate hardware and software interactions systematically by varying peripheral configurations and test conditions.
Design considerations
Communication debugging requires separating physical-layer signal integrity from firmware scheduling, peripheral configuration, and system-level loading. A clean waveform alone does not prove deterministic application timing.
Engineering takeaway
The fastest path to a root cause is often a controlled experiment that changes one variable at a time.
